Good News for SAP: ERP Top Priority in 2008

Amid a host of not-so-optimistic IT spending forecasts for 2008, it appears that spending on ERP -- software giant SAP's bread-and-butter offering -- will continue strong throughout the year. According to a quarterly survey put out by UBS, spending on ERP software is a top priority for many executives.

ERP is big, and SAP is the undisputed ERP king. According to IDC analyst Albert Pang, "The most lucrative [IT] segment is the $15 billion market for ERP software geared to huge corporations with more than 5,000 employees. Pang noted that "SAP dominated [the ERP market] in 2006 with 28.5% market share."

As companies struggle in a tough economy to drive efficiency, gain a competitive edge, and maximize their sizable past investments in enterprise applications, the growing importance of and dependence on ERP cannot be denied. According to a recent CIO magazine study, "More than 85 percent of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that their ERP systems were essential to the core of their businesses, and that they "could not live without them."
